Hi! We were
given the tasks of watching some videos and reporting back on what the video
showed and our reaction to them. We will also be looking at the perspective of
the parents, child, and the teacher. Like the prior posts these videos are
mostly about IPADs and other technology devices that are used with students.
Video #1--- CBS News
Autism
and IPADS
This
video looked directly at an elementary school. Here at the school, students
with autism were using IPADs. They found that students with autism could
communicate better with this sort of device. Teacher’s loved the way that the
students were learning to use this to communicate, but we did learn in my prior
research that this type of device and behavior also have to have an element of
human interaction. The teacher can’t solely rely on the device in order for the
student to learn.
Video #2 ---- 60 Minutes
Apps for Autism
This
was an amazing video. It shows the power of being able to work with students
using IPADs and helping them to become a powerful learner. IPADS are helping these
students to be able to work in a classrooms in ways other devices could not.
The IPADS allow the students to be able to share their thoughts and ideas
without having to write it down with a pencil and paper.
Video #3 --- ABC News
iPad Gives
Voice to the Autistic
This
video was pretty cool; I haven’t seen anything like it for the IPAD before.
They interviewed a gentleman by the name Sam Senott. Sam invented an app called
ProLoQuo2Go. The idea of this app is to help people communicate with others
that aren’t able to- example students with autism. Being it’s on the IPAD there
are boxes on the page that you can click and it says the words verbally. These
words can be, everyday words that we use or it can be programmed into sentences
that you would like it to say. This would be an amazing app for so many
students. It can fit into your classroom because it is small and portable.
Video #4 --- Local News in a town
Ipad Helps the Autistic Speak
A
local news station showed a clip of a woman whose daughter has autism. She was always
looking for new and inventive ways to help her daughter and she came across the
IPAD. Her daughter worked on the IPAD a few times and the mother could see a
huge difference in her communication skills. Unfortunately, her family was not
able to personally buy an IPAD because of their finances-by after her story was
aired a good samaritan bought one and sent it to her house. Her mother is grateful
because now she can see the changes in her daughter and she is able to work on
the IPAD everyday.
Video #5 --- Jake
iPad app
iWriteWords
This
video is of a boy names Jake. Jake has autism and uses the IPAD to write words
and sentences. He uses an app called iWriteWords. This app allows Jake to use
his fingers and write the words and letters on the screen. He seemed very
engaged in the act and liked working with it. The dad is the one recording the
video and you can gear him saying good job. With an app like this you can have
students in your classroom working on it throughout the day. This would be an
app to use solely or with a one on one or a teacher.
